Thais nieuws december
De berichten op deze pagina zijn doorgaans ontleend aan Bangkok Post en een enkele keer aan andere bronnen. Voor de betrouwbaarheid steek ik mijn handen niet in het vuur.

Overpeinzing op de drempel
31 december, 23 uur – Kijk op Mono29 naar beelden van de Mono29 Pattaya Countdown 2023, The festival of seaverse. Sandara Park zingt I don’t care.
Zou ze daarmee bedoelen dat ze niet kan zingen? Heb het geluid voor alle zekerheid uitgezet. Om haar heen dansen afwisselend vier meiden en vier knapen. Ze dragen allen hippe kleertjes, maken suggestieve dansbewegingen, maar ze zouden niet voor het fraaie lichtdecor moeten staan.
Bij mij in de buurt klinken om 23:57 uur al luide knallen, maar het mega vuurwerk dat ook in Bangkok zal losbarsten, wacht op klokslag 12 uur.
Misschien vraagt u zich af waarom ik op mijn kamer ben en niet in de stad. Simpel: ik heb geen zin om te midden van dronken Thais over de drempel te stappen. Dronken mensen zijn onvoorspelbaar, ik blijf liever uit hun buurt. Bovendien houd ik niet van mensenmassa’s.
Overpeinzing
31 december, 5:31 uur. Mono29 vertoont The three cripples, een Thaise komische actiefilm uit 2007 van anderhalf uur. Wil ik die zien? Nee, want ik vind de film helemaal niet grappig; bovendien overgeacteerd.
De film gaat over Yen, een man met vreselijk scheve tanden; Pe, een vrouw die mank loopt, en Le, een man met schele ogen. Le wordt gespeeld door Koti Arambawy die ik vaak in tv-programma’s zie.
De enige manier om rijk te worden, denken ze, is om lid te worden van de maffiabende van Tod. Het drietal krijgt van de maffiabaas de opdracht om de zoon van een miljonair te ontvoeren, maar ze brengen per ongeluk de verkeerde jongen mee. De jongen die ze hebben ontvoerd is Sang-wu, de enige zoon van Bo.
Later zorgen ze voor Sang-wu omdat de jongen bang is voor het geweld in zijn familie. Bo wil de ontvoerders martelen en Yen, Pe en Le worstelen nu om te overleven.
Een nieuwe dag, een nieuwe krant bij 23° (half bewolkt)
31 december, 7:37 uur – Dat heet een gotspe (letterlijk brutaliteit), het citaat ‘The prime minister thinks differently from politicians. He always puts people’s best interests first’. Dat zegt Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, leider van de United Thai Nation (UTN) Party, in het achtergrondverhaal Party ‘no mere vehicle for PM’.
Hij houdt vol dat het een middel is om de samenleving te verbeteren en het levensonderhoud van mensen te verbeteren, geen Trojaans paard voor Prayut om aan de macht te blijven. Gelooft u het? Nou, ik niet.
Gotspe komt uit het bargoens. Het is geleend van het Jiddisch חוצפה (chotspe), van het Hebreeuws חֻצְפָּה (ḥuṣpā), van het Aramees חוצפא. Verwant aan Engelse chutzpah en Duitse Chuzpe.
Zoals ik gisteren al meldde, verschijnt de krant tot 2 januari in vakantieomvang, hetgeen voor de zaterdag betekent dat ze tot één katern is teruggebracht met twaalf pagina’s. De krant telt op de bruto drie maar netto 2,5 binnenlandpagina’s acht nieuwsberichten en -verhalen, vijf foto’s, waarvan twee uitgesneden, een 1-koloms foto en een infographic met de New Year toll van 29 december.
Het aantal verkeersdoden bedroeg 37 (45), het aantal gewonden 351 (363) bij 349 ongelukken (371). Tussen haakjes de cijfers van een jaar geleden. De rubriek In Brief ontbreekt, het langste verhaal van een halve pagina is een uitgebreid profiel van Chadchart Man of the people: Chadchart shapes up.
De gouverneur van Bangkok boekt vooruitgang als rentmeester van de stad, nadat hij een groot deel van de hoofdstedelijke bevolking voor zich heeft gewonnen en zelfs de ‘sterkste minister ter wereld’ is genoemd.

De krant opent met Curbs likely for Chinese arrivals. Het ministerie van Volksgezondheid is klaar om Covid-19-screeningmaatregelen voor te stellen voor internationale reizigers, met name reizigers die uit China komen.
Het achtergrondverhaal zegt Making peace with Covid. Het coronavirus is afgezwakt en de samenleving leert ermee leven. En het bericht zegt dat de wereld treurt om de dood van voetballer Pele, The greatest player of all time. De wereld? Dat is dan zonder ondergetekende, want die heeft niets met voetbal. Pele werd 82 jaar.
Pagina 2 telt het profiel van Chadchart, de overlees van het achtergrondverhaal van de voorpagina en het bericht Chiang Mai villagers get helping hand from CIB volunteer campaign met bijgaande foto. Het Central Investigation Boureau (CIB) heeft een vrijwilligersproject gelanceerd om de levenskwaliteit van studenten in het Omkoi-district van Chiang Mai te helpen verbeteren.
Ten slotte de 3, een halve pagina, die opent met Hotel-casino fire claims 27 Thai lives op de website geplaatst onder de kop 27 Thais perish in Poipet casino inferno. Verder bevat de pagina twee berichten en de infographic. Het zijn Ten to testify in DNP bribery claim case en Committee to probe links between Amlo and Tuhao.
• De Counter-Corruption Division (CCD) heeft 10 getuigen opgeroepen om na nieuwjaar te getuigen in de omkopingszaak waarbij het hoofd van het Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) betrokken was.

Een nieuwe dag, een nieuwe krant bij 22° (overwegend helder)
30 december, 9:48 uur – Wakker om 5:38, weer mijn bed opgezocht en een kleine vier uur later begonnen aan Nieuws uit Thailand. Tussendoor trouwens weer wakker en gezien dat de krant al naar mijn kamer was gebracht.
BP verschijnt vanaf vandaag tot 2 januari in vakantie-omvang; de krant is teruggebracht tot twee katernen, Nieuws en Life, terwijl Business in het eerste katern is opgenomen met drie pagina’s.
De krant telt in het eerste katern bruto twee maar netto 1,75 binnenland pagina’s plus het jaaroverzicht All the world’s a stage. Wereldwijde kwesties zoals de Russisch-Oekraïense oorlog troffen landen over de hele wereld, en Thailand, als gastheer van de Apec-top, was geen uitzondering.
Binnenland telt negen nieuwsberichten en -verhalen, vier foto’s en twee postzegelfoto’s. De grootste foto van vier kolommen, bovenaan de voorpagina bijna tot de vouw, toont wachtenden die in een lange rij voor de loketten op station Hua Lamphong staan. De exodus uit de hoofdstad is gisteren begonnen, met de meesten op weg naar het Noordoosten, ook over wegen die clogged zijn met verkeer.
De krant opent met Ministry braces as curbs end. Premier Prayut heeft het ministerie van Toerisme en Sport opdracht gegeven maatregelen in kaart te brengen om de terugkeer van Chinese toeristen aan te pakken.
De brand in een hotel-casino in Poipet (Cambodja) wordt op de voorpagina onder de vouw in een 40koloms bericht, inclusief een foto van drie kolommen, gemeld. Het bevestigde dodental telt inmiddels negentien (laatste nieuws op de website), de krant noemt tien doden en dertig gewonden. In het complex werkten vierhonderd personen waaronder veel Thais.
Het Life katern opent paginagroot met Trends in food, inclusief acht foto’s. Plantaardige maaltijden en de opkomst van kookscholen bepaalden 2022.
Pagina 2 meldt Hot spots to ring in New Year, de 3 The 13 most exciting European hotels opening in 2023 (geen enkele in Nederland) en de 3 en 4 Counting down the best restaurants. Life heeft het afgelopen jaar zeventig eetgelegenheden besproken. Here are the 10 that stand out.
De achterpagina somt de 65 most stylish people of 2022 op, althans volgens de New York Times. De meeste namen zeggen me niets, enkele wel zoals Serena Williams, Kate Bush en koningin Elizabeth II (The hats. The hair. The handbags).

Die meldt Political parties form new alliances, een verhaal dat ik in deze vorm niet kan vinden op de website. Wel Parties form alliance, stop short of merging dat dezelfde informatie bevat.
Als laatste nog even op de website gekeken wat het allerlaatste nieuws is. Het zijn drie berichten: Body of another Sukhothai crewman identified, Poll: Minority agree with 4am pub closing en Rescuers scour gutted Cambodian casino.
• Pogingen om de laatste vijf vermiste bemanningsleden van HTMS Sukhothai te vinden blijven gericht op eilanden en zee voor Chumphon, aangezien er nog een matroos is geïdentificeerd.
• Uit een peiling blijkt dat slechts 41% van de respondenten het eens is met een voorstel om pubs en uitgaansgelegenheden open te laten tot 04.00 uur, en ze zijn verdeeld over waar de late uren moeten worden toegestaan.

29 december – Wakker om 5:44 uur, het voelt frisser aan dan de 22 graden die de weerapp op mijn iPhone als temperatuur aangeeft. De gevoelstemperatuur zal zeker onder de 20 graden liggen. Draag daarom mijn truitje wat geen overbodig kledingstuk is.
Mono29 toont aflevering 9 van Twisted Fate of Love, een Chinese dramaserie uit 2020 over twee broers die op dezelfde vrouw verliefd raken waardoor hun relatie onder druk komt te staan. Om 6:15 begint het journaal Good Morning Thaland. Altijd aardig om items te zien die ik in de krant zal tegenkomen.
Maar nu maakt Amado Shopping reclame voor Collagen Ceramide, een rijstextract, met een presentator die praat in HSL-snelheid. Dat hij niet struikelt over zijn woorden, is een wondertje. Verder reclame voor Pattaya Countdown, een evenement dat toch doorgaat ondanks eerdere aangekondigde afgelasting.
Om 6:19 uur brengt de nachtwaker de krant naar mijn kamer en neemt de plastic zak met afval mee die voor de kamerdeur stond. De krant opent over twee kolommen met Govt girds for China visit influx; ernaast een 4-koloms foto met koning Vajiralongkorn in Wong Wian Yai tijdens een ceremonie die koning Taksin eert, de oprichter van het Thon Buri koninkrijk (Honouring the past). Gisteren werd zijn kroningsdag in 1767 herdacht.
Noem ook alvast het bericht Press takes aim at politicians in nicknames, een jaarlijkse traditie van de parlementaire pers om spotnamen te bedenken voor parlement en politici. Het Huis van Afgevaardigden is ‘collapsible’ (inklapbaar) genoemd, verwijzend naar het veelvuldig onvermogen om te functioneren vanwege het gebrek aan quorum in het afgelopen jaar.
Het bericht noemt niet premier Prayut, wel onder anderen House Speaker Chuan Leekpai, Chuab Suan Seh genoemd (stuttering Chuan, stotterend Chuan) omdat hij vaak moeite had het respect van de wetgevers af te dwingen ondanks zijn reputatie en image als doorgewinterd politicus.

Telecom domineerde dit jaar de M&A-markt, maar bedrijven in alle sectoren probeerden fusies te gebruiken om hun positie te versterken in een veranderend zakelijk terrein. Als allerlaatste noem ik de opening van de binnenpagina’s van het eerste katern. De 3 opent met Govt policies in crosshairs. De oppositie laat weer eens haar tanden zien. Ze heeft een motie ingediend waarin wordt opgeroepen tot een algemeen debat over het vermeende falen van de regering om haar gelofte na te komen al haar aangekondigde beleid sinds haar aantreden volledig uit te voeren.
De 4 opent met Cambodia envoy bids farewell. Ouk Sorphorn, de ambassadeur van Cambodja in Thailand, heeft gisteren in het Government House afscheid genomen van premier Prayut Chan-o-cha. Hij staat op het punt naar huis terug te keren na het beëindigen van zijn ambtstermijn.
Op de valreep: Police launch seven-day road safety campaign. De politie is gisteren begonnen met haar jaarlijkse zevendaagse nieuwjaarscampagne voor verkeersveiligheid. Ditmaal worden prijzen van 10.000 baht uitgeloofd aan mensen die de beste video’s van verkeersovertredingen insturen. Gaat het lukken het aantal verkeersogelukken, doden en gewonden terug te dringen? Ik ben pessimistisch want Thais zijn hardleers. Ze stappen zonder gewetenswroeging dronken op de motorfiets of nemen achter het stuur plaats.
Overpeinzing
28 december – Altijd interessant om naar een film te kijken die is gebaseerd op ware gebeurtenissen, waarbij je wel moet bedenken dat het om een film gaat en niet om een 1-op-1 vertelling van de gebeurtenis. Moet denken aan Gandhi en The Last Emperor die ik gezien heb.
Mono29 toonde vannacht The Whistleblower, een biografische dramafilm uit 2010, geregisseerd door Larysa Kondracki met in de hoofdrol Rachel Weisz. Het scenario is geïnspireerd op het verhaal van Kathryn Bolkovac, een politieagent uit Nebraska die in 1999 werd aangeworven als VN-vredeshandhaver voor DynCorp International in het naoorlogse Bosnië en Herzegovina.
Terwijl ze daar was, ontdekte ze een Bosnische ring voor sekshandel die werd bediend en gefaciliteerd door DynCorp-medewerkers, met internationale vredeshandhavers die de andere kant op keken. Bolkovac werd ontslagen en gedwongen het land te verlaten nadat ze had geprobeerd de ring te sluiten. Ze bracht het verhaal naar BBC News in het VK en won een rechtszaak wegens onrechtmatig ontslag tegen DynCorp.
Regisseur Kondracki wilde dat haar debuutfilm over mensenhandel zou gaan, en op de universiteit kwam ze het verhaal van Bolkovac tegen. Zij en Kirwan, met wie ze samen het scenario schreef, hadden moeite om financiële steun voor het project te krijgen.
Acht jaar nadat Kondracki besloot de film te produceren, verzekerde ze zich van financiering en castte ze Weisz in de hoofdrol. The Whistleblower, een coproductie van Canada, Duitsland en de Verenigde Staten, werd van oktober tot december 2009 in Roemenië opgenomen.
De film ging in première op 13 september 2010 op het Toronto International Film Festival, en werd gepresenteerd als een fictionalisering van gebeurtenissen die eind jaren negentig plaatsvonden. Kondracki zei dat de feiten in grote lijnen juist zijn, maar dat sommige details voor de film zijn weggelaten.
De film kreeg gemengde recensies. Weisz en haar medesterren werden geprezen, maar het intense geweld in verschillende scènes, werd door critici gekritiseerd en sommigen noemden het uitbuiting. Kondracki en Weisz antwoordden dat wat er in Bosnië gebeurde, voor de film was afgezwakt.
The Whistleblower (in het Nederlands klokkenluider) ontving verschillende prijzen en nominaties, waaronder drie nominaties bij de Genie Awards 2012. VN-secretaris-generaal Ban Ki-moon was gastheer van een vertoning van de film en beloofde dat er actie zou worden ondernomen om verdere gevallen van mensenhandel te voorkomen.
The Guardian meldde dat andere VN-functionarissen probeerden de afgebeelde gebeurtenissen te bagatelliseren en dat initiatieven tegen mensenhandel in Bosnië werden afgebroken.

28 december – Wakker om 6:22 uur. De drie nieuwslezers van Good Morning Thailand, het journaal van Mono29, hebben hun kleding aangepast aan de nieuwjaarsvakantie; ze dragen een sportief shirtje met korte mouwen.
Omdat de krant mijn kamer nog niet heeft bereikt, naar beneden gegaan, naar de hal van het hotel. Heerlijk toeval, toen ik de lift uitstapte, nam de nachtwaker de krant in ontvangst van de bezorger op motorfiets.
BP telt vandaag bruto drie maar netto 2,25 binnenlandpagina’s in het eerste katern plus een pagina met het jaaroverzicht Mother Nature’s still crying. Van overstromingen en extreem weer tot klimaatverandering en de acceptatie van de bio-circulaire-groene economie, het milieu was uppermost in the minds of many in 2022. Het overzicht telt van alle vijf huilbuien een foto.
De nieuwspagina’s tellen dertien nieuwsberichten, zes foto’s, een postzegelfoto en een 1-koloms foto. De krant opent met PM wants ‘Boss’ found. Premier Prayut heeft de Royal Thai Police bevolen er alles aan te doen om Red Bull-telg Vorayuth ‘Boss’ Yoovidhya voor de rechter te brengen.
Nou ja, dat gaat dus niet gebeuren: Boss is een telg uit een superrijke elitefamilie en blijft net zo lang in het buitenland tot ook de laatste aanklacht van de hit-and-run aanrijding is verjaard. Wat hij op zijn kerfstok heeft, hoef ik toch niet te vermelden?
Boven de opening meldt BP Prince Dipangkorn visits Princess Bajrakitiyabha in hospital. Nog steeds stromen gewone Thais naar het ziekenhuis om haar, wat de krant noemt, een spoedig herstel te wensen. Vrijwilligers van Jit Arsa (spirit of volunteering) voorzien de wachtenden van voedsel en water.
De prins die naar verluidt autistisch is, is door zijn vader nog niet aangewezen als troonopvolger. Over de toestand van de prinses, geboren uit zijn eerste huwelijke met zijn nicht, heb ik al meermalen geschreven.
En boven dit bericht, helemaal bovenaan de voorpagina, staan twee foto’s: Een met de koning die in Wat Nana Panachat in Ubon Ratchathani de rotan draden doorsnijdt waaraan luk nimit, een bal van steen, hangt waardoor de steen in een gat valt. De ceremonie is bedoeld om de hoofdkapel af te bakenen.
De andere foto toont de prins, een zwart mondkapje voor, die bij het ziekenhuis arriveert.

Ik neem alleen de tekst over van Kate Bush Renaissance. Begin juni verscheen het eerste deel van het vierde seizoen van Stranger Things op Netflix. De show is een van de populairste series van het platform.
Stranger Things zorgde voor Kate Bush’ Renaissance omdat haar nummer Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) in een aflevering te zien was. Kort daarna verdubbelde het aantal YouTube-weergaven van de muziekvideo en was het nummer tijdens de zomer onontkoombaar op TikTok.

27 december – Kijk zo nu en dan op Mono29 naar The Limehouse Golem, een Britse horror-mysteriefilm uit 2016. De titel intrigeerde me, dus Wikipedia te hulp geroepen. Die schrijft: Een reeks moorden schokt de gemeenschap Limehouse in de havengebieden van Victoriaans Londen. Journalisten noemen de moordenaar de Golem, naar de joodse legende.
De stad wordt bevangen door angst daar de seriemoordenaar vrij rondloopt en cryptische berichten achterlaat in het bloed van zijn slachtoffers. Met weinig aanknopingspunten en toenemende publieke druk wijst Scotland Yard de zaak toe aan inspecteur Kildare, een doorgewinterde rechercheur die het vermoeden heeft dat hij erin is geluisd om te mislukken. Geconfronteerd met een lange lijst van verdachten, moet Kildare vertrouwen op de hulp van een getuige om de moorden te stoppen en de maniak voor het gerecht te brengen.
The Limehouse Golem ontving overwegend positieve recensies van filmcritici. Het heeft een goedkeuringsscore van 74% op de review-aggregator-website Rotten Tomatoes, gebaseerd op 78 beoordelingen, met een gewogen gemiddelde van 6,4 / 10. Op Metacritic heeft de film een gewogen gemiddelde score van 63 van de 100, gebaseerd op 20 critici, wat duidt op ‘over het algemeen gunstige recensies’. Ikon London Magazine merkte op dat ‘de film voortreffelijk is opgenomen, met fantastische historische decors, locaties en kleding’.
Een nieuwe dag, een nieuwe krant bij 21° (overwegend helder)
27 december – Wakker om 5:35 uur, de krant lag er nog niet want die verwacht ik op zijn vroegst om 6 uur. Mono29 toont een aflevering van Twisted Fate of Love, waarvan ik al eerder de synopsis noemde, onderbroken door reclame van Amado Shopping voor Cerigi II Probiotic.
Mij voorgenomen vandaag een haring te happen, maar dat kan niet eerder dan om 14 uur in bistro Hangover, voorheen eigendom van een Nederlander. Wie de huidige eigenaar is, weet ik niet.
De drie schilderijtjes met foto’s van het staatsiebezoek van koning Bhumibol en koningin Sirikit in 1960 hangen inmiddels weer recht, zag ik de laatste keer dat ik er was. Dat ze scheef hingen meldde ik op 20 december in mijn Facebook column.
Ga om kwart over zes naar beneden, naar de hal van het hotel. Misschien ligt de krant er al. Het is fris, maar niet koud. Tien minuten later wordt de krant bezorgd met bovenaan de voorpagina een 4-koloms foto van 99 mannen die in Wat Phra 9 Kanchanaphisek als monnik zijn ingewijd.
Ze blijven er tot 9 januari bidden voor een spoedig herstel (formulering bijschrift) van de zieke prinses Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati. Zouden ze weten dat de prinses op sterven na dood is en kunstmatig in leven wordt gehouden?
De krant opent met PM calls for NYE caution. De mensen mogen zelf beslissen of ze evenementen op oudejaarsavond organiseren, maar organisatoren moeten ‘maximale voorzorgsmaatregelen nemen’, zei premier Prayut maandag.
Een tweede bericht op de voorpagina noemt in een infographic tien topsteden where to ring in the new year. De steden, waaronder Bangkok, zijn klaar om feestvierders te verwelkomen die van plan zijn het jaar te beëindigen with a bang.
BP telt vandaag bruto drie maar netto circa 1,8 binnenlandpagina’s in het eerste katern met elf nieuwsberichten en -verhalen en drie foto’s, plus het jaaroverzicht Politicians make hay while the sun shines van een volle pagina met vijf foto’s.

Business schrijft: Dit jaar zat boordevol evenementen die zowel vooruitgang als tegenslagen belichtten – onvermijdelijke realiteiten in de zakenwereld. Het jaar stelde de overheid en bedrijven voor uitdagingen op zoek naar nieuwe kansen na de pandemie, wekte hoop bij autofabrikanten die anticiperen op de groei van de elektrische auto-industrie in Thailand, evenals mislukte pogingen van sommige bedrijven om hun bedrijf verder te laten groeien.
Life schrijft: In 2022 breidde de levendige kunstscene van Thailand zich uit en toonde diversiteit. Kunstliefhebbers konden genieten van tentoonstellingen en kunstgerelateerde evenementen die een breed scala aan kunstvormen brachten. Veel tentoonstellingen werden buiten kunstgaleriëen georganiseerd, waardoor kijkers gemakkelijk toegang hadden tot evenementen. Met als hoogtepunt natuurlijk de BangkokArt Biennale 2022. In elk winkelcentrum klinkt Jingle Bells en wordt gedroomd over een witte kerstmis. In de metro hoor ik vaak Christmas carols die ik nog ken uit mijn jaar in Engeland. Eigenlijk vind ik dat Thais niet het recht hebben kerstmis te vieren. De christelijke feestdagen passen niet in de Thaise cultuur. Vieren wij in Europa Songkran? Nou dan!
Overpeinzing
26 december, Tweede Kerstdag – Een oorlogsschip dat in vredestijd zinkt, moet een unicum zijn in de scheepvaartgeschiedenis. Oké, het gebeurde weliswaar tijdens een zware storm met hoge golven, maar dan nog. Als je het mij vraagt, waren veel te veel matrozen aan boord wat de kapseizing kan verklaren. 105 opvarenden lijkt me rijkelijk veel voor een klein schip als een korvet.
Wikipedia schrijft: Een korvet is een klein oorlogsschip. Het is van oudsher de kleinste scheepsklasse die wordt beschouwd als een echt (of “beoordeeld”) oorlogsschip. De oorlogsschipklasse boven het korvet is die van het fregat, terwijl de klasse eronder historisch gezien die van de oorlogssloep was.
Korvetten zijn 180-420 ft (55-128 m) lang. Ze zijn meestal bewapend met kanonnen van middelgroot en klein kaliber, grond-grondraketten, grond-luchtraketten (SAM) en anti-onderzeeërwapens. Velen bieden plaats aan een kleine of middelgrote helikopter voor onderzeebootbestrijding. De Royal Thai Navy heeft drie korvetten van de Khamronsin-klasse, een korvet van de Ratanakosin-klasse en twee korvetten van de Tapi-klasse.

De zoektocht naar de rest van de vermiste bemanning van de gezonken HTMS Sukhothai ging gisteren door met een team van 53 duikers en medici die de zeebodem rond het wrak dat op 40 meter diepte ligt, van het schip uitkamden. Ook wordt aan de kust gezocht.
Tot nu toe zijn 18 dode bemanningsleden geborgen en worden 11 nog vermist, terwijl 76 opvarenden zijn gered. Het schip zonk op 18 december twintig nautische mijl voor de kust van Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Voordat het schip zonk, nam het 15 mariniers en nog eens 15 personeelsleden aan boord om deel te nemen aan een ceremonie ter gelegenheid van de sterfdag van de prins van Chumphon, die wordt beschouwd als de ‘vader van de Thaise marine’ in Chumphon. Daardoor waren er dertig reddingsvesten te weinig.

25 december, 6:35 uur – De krant beneden in de hal van het hotel opgehaald. Er waait een kille wind, ook in mijn kamer is het frisjes. Ik trek mijn H&M truitje aan, ooit cadeau gekregen van mijn dochter, dat nog steeds goede diensten verricht. Het ochtendgloren mag ik dan het mooiste tijdstip van de dag vinden, maar aan kou heb ik een broertje dood.
Zoals gebruikelijk op zondag bestaat de krant uit drie katernen: Nieuws, Sunday Comics en Spotlight met artikelen uit de New York Times. De krant opent met het achtergrondverhaal Trat, trade and tourism en Spotlight met Drag shows fire up gender wars.

24 december – Om 6:35 uur naar beneden gegaan, naar de hal van het hotel, om de krant op te halen. De hal was leeg, de krant lag klaar. Het is fris, heb mijn truitje weer aangetrokken. Mono29 toont Beethoven’s 2nd, een Amerikaanse familiefilm uit 1993. De film is de tweede van acht afleveringen in de Beethoven-filmreeks. Aanvankelijk was er geen vervolg gepland, maar het werd geproduceerd na het onverwachte financiële succes van de eerste film.
Het eerste wat opvalt van de krant is de infographic in een zwart kader over vier kolommen geplaatst onder de vouw tot bijna de onderkant van de voorpagina, getiteld Prayut vs Prawit pros and cons. Het staat ingebouwd in de opening PM exits PPRP, joins UTN, die de gehele voorpagina onder de vouw vult. Het verhaal staat in deze vorm nog niet op de website, wel een eerdere versie die ik in Nieuwsflitsen noem.
Verder op de voorpagina het fotobericht Moral support from Kuwait en het bericht New Year celebrations not cancelled yet, officials say.
Op de foto in het fotobericht brengt de zaakgelastigde van de Koeweitse ambassade, Al Refa, een bezoek aan het King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital waar prinses Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati wordt verpleegd. Hij heeft een bloemetje meegenomen en wenst haar in een beterschapswens een spoedig herstel.
Zoals gebruikelijk op zaterdag bestaat de krant uit twee katernen: Nieuws en Weekend Business. Het katern opent met Businesses want cap on fuel tariff. Bedrijfsleiders hebben gezamenlijk de regering opgeroepen om een jaar lang een maximum te stellen aan het brandstoftarief als een nieuw ‘nieuwjaarsgeschenk’ om Thailand te helpen onaangename gevolgen te voorkomen naarmate de economie zich herstelt.
BP telt vandaag op de bruto drie maar netto 2,75 binnenland pagina’s in het eerste katern elf nieuwsberichten en -verhalen, vijf foto’s in een fotobericht, één postzegelfoto en de al genoemde infographic.
De twee grootste foto’s meten vier kolommen. Op pagina 2 een veld met roze, gele en rode tulpen in het Chalermprakiat Park in Chiang Mai waar het Charming Chiang Mai Flower Festival 2023 Miracle Flora wordt gehouden. Duurt tot 2 januari.
De andere 4-kolommer die bovenaan pagina 3 staat, toont kerstdecoraties in een kraam op de Sampheng markt.
Tot slot noem ik nog de opening van pagina 2 en 3. De 2 opent met Prasit tries to evade court hearing, de 3 met Covid vaccine HXP-GPOVac enters 3rd phase.
• Drie personen zijn gearresteerd omdat ze naar verluidt hebben geprobeerd Prasit Jeawkok, een zakenman die verwikkeld is in een fraudezaak van 1 miljard baht, te helpen ontsnappen tijdens zijn rechtszitting op vrijdag.
• De Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO) is gisteren begonnen met de derde ronde van klinische tests voor haar Covid-vaccin HXP-GPOVac in de provincie Nakhon Phanom.

23 december, 8:34 uur – Wakker om 8:12 uur bij een temperatuur die geen warme kleding vereist, zoals de voorgaande dagen. De krant was al naar mijn kamer gebracht, een eerste blik leverde een domper op want de opening PPRP to overhaul structure gaat over regeringspartij Palang Pracharath (wie van mijn lezers interesseert dat?).
Prominent bovenaan de voorpagina staat vierkoloms foto met koningin Jetsun van Bhutan die in het King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital een get-well bericht schrijft en een bloemetje heeft meegebracht voor de zieke prinses. Zou haar verteld zijn wat de prinses werkelijk scheelt en dat haar kans op herstel nihil is.
Verder op de voorpagina onder de vouw een follow-up over de gezonken corvet met de 2-koloms infographic Searching for the missing (Chaicharn grilled over deadly shipwreck). Een onderzoek is begonnen om uit te zoeken waarom er niet genoeg reddingsvesten aan boord waren van de HTMS Sukhothai, het oorlogsschip van de Royal Thai Navy dat zondag kapseisde.
Inmiddels bedraagt het dodental zes en nog steeds worden tientallen matrozen vermist. Staatssecretaris Chaicharn van Defensie mag dat eens uitleggen.

De krant opent met RTN takes flak over lost ship. De Royal Thai Navy (RTN) is onder vuur komen te liggen vanwege het zinken van haar oorlogsschip, de HTMS Sukhothai. Intussen treft de parlementscommissie militaire zaken van het Huis van Afgevaardigden voorbereidinen om premier Prayut die tevens minister van Defensie is, volgende week het vuur na aan de schenen te leggen. Ook marinehoofd admiraal Choengchai Chomchoengpaet is door de commissie opgeroepen.

Ben in afwachting van de krant en denk na over mijn bestemming wanneer ik klaar ben met Nieuws uit Thailand.
Het zal wel Indulge aan de Sukhumvit Road worden wanneer het nog te vroeg is naar Sarica (Surawong Road) te gaan. Mijn Facebook vrienden hebben er al kennis mee kunnen maken want mijn FB column gaat vandaag over American fried rice, een gerecht dat niets met de VS te maken heeft.
Om 6:47 uur bracht de nachtwaker de krant naar mijn kamer en nam de plastic zak met afval mee die miss Piggy een dag eerder liet staan. De krant opent met New Year govt gift bonanza (bonus, meevaller, godsgeschenk).

Maar de particuliere sector reageert lukewarm (lauw, onverschillig) op de maatregelen, zoals het Business katern vandaag in de opening meldt. De middenstand meent dat het pakket de bestedingen zal stimuleren, maar de vastgoedsector zegt dat de maatregelen de markt meer sluggish (sloom, traag) maken, grotendeels vanwege de loan-to-value limiet.
Het Life katern opent met drie pagina’s Functional luxe. BP schrijft: Life kiest de 20 beste gadgets en technisch speelgoed van 2022 die zeker je interesse zullen wekken, waaronder de Gravastar Mars Pro Bluetooth speaker (foto).
Deze futuristische Bluetooth-luidspreker past op het bureau van elke Star Wars-fan. De speaker heeft voldoende RGB-verlichting en een aanraakgevoelige volumeregeling.

20 december – Heb de neiging om de krant vandaag onaangeroerd te laten want kijk op Mono29 naar Twisted Fate of Love, een Chinese film uit 2020.
Ik kijk graag naar Chinese films, waarbij de beschrijving op MyDramaList helpt het verhaal enigszins te volgen. Maar dat hoeft niet eens want de locatie, huizen, interieurs, kostuums enzovoort bieden voldoende kijkgenot.
De film gaat over twee broers: de een gracieus en elegant, de ander flamboyant maar onopvallend, die merken dat hun hechte relatie verbroken wordt als ze voor dezelfde vrouw vallen. Onder invloed van Dong Yue vinden de twee hun weg terug naar elkaar.
Maar er is een belangrijker reden om de krant te verwaarlozen voordat de haan driemaal heeft gekraaid (zie Mattheus 26: 31-35) en dat is de temperatuur waarbij ik om 7:03 uur wakker werd: 19 graden!!! Is dat koud of niet? Ja mensen, dat is bitterkoud en alleen te overleven onder dikke dekens, want een kachel heb ik niet, zelfs geen straalkachel.

18 december, 6:53 uur – Wakker om 6:39 uur, het huiswerk van vandaag was al naar mijn kamer gebracht. Het is koud, dat wil zeggen Thais koud, want in Rotterdam vriest het vier graden en dat is pas écht koud. Alvorens een blik te werpen op de krant koffie en een peuk.
Dat is wel nodig want de voorpagina staat voor twee derde deel in het teken van de WK finalewedstrijd in Qatar. BP’s vormgever had een creatieve inval: hij heeft de open kapitalen Argentina en France in de paginabrede kop de kleur gegeven van beider landsvlaggen.
Onder de vouw een tweekoloms tekst met links een opengewerkte foto van Messi aan de bal en rechts Mbappe en op pagina 11 en 12 nog meer voetbalgekte. ’t Is aan mij niet besteed, want voor voetbal kom ik mijn bed niet uit.
De rest van de voorpagina, boven de opening, is voor de zieke prinses Bajrakitiyabha onder de kop BMA opens well-wishers’ books city-wide met de overlees van een halve pagina Outpouring of love for princess op pagina 3.
De foto Fond Memories toont Waraporn Soysen die shows a framed picture of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati reaching over to hand her a degree during a conferring ceremony. Zal wel een fan van de prinses zijn, want ze wordt verder niet genoemd.

De halve voorpagina tot over de vouw meldt dat de Nation prays for princess, voorzien van twee foto’s met het koningspaar en premier Prayut die een bezoek hebben gebracht aan het King Chulalongkorn Memorial ziekenhuis waar prinses Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati met een hartprobleem is opgenomen.
Prinses Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya bezocht op dezelfde dag ook de prinses in het ziekenhuis en prinses Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, prinses Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana en prinses Ubolratana gaven hun vertegenwoordigers de opdracht om bloemen naar de prinses te brengen.
Met zoveel koninklijke aandacht moet de prinses wel snel herstellen, alhoewel het bericht geen melding maakt van de ernst van haar hartprobleem. Evenmin lees is of de koning en koningin aan het ziekbed van de prinses hebben gezeten en haar hand hebben vastgehouden.
Volgens een verklaring van het Royal Household Bureau viel prinses Bajrakitiyabha flauw tijdens het trainen van haar honden in het district Pak Chong in Nakhon Ratchasima. De honden werden getraind omdat ze zouden deelnemen aan het Thailand Working Dog Championship, georganiseerd door het Royal Thai Army, dat tot maandag duurt. Ze kreeg eerste hulp in het Pak Chong Nana Hospital en werd later overgevlogen naar Bangkok.

Van de berichten in het eerste katern licht ik er één uit, Wildlife to get 3D crosswalks. Een groep ecotoeristen die zichzelf Jud Kang Tent noemt, heeft samen met nationaal park Khao Yai en TOA Paint Thailand een project gelanceerd om oversteekplaatsen te creëren die automoblisten aansporen langzamer te rijden. 16 december, 8 uur – Stel je voor dat een van Nederlands prinsessen in het ziekenhuis is opgenomen, zou NRC Handelsblad dan openen met een bericht over de zieke prinses? Nederlands kwaliteitskrant zou het wel melden, maar er zeker niet mee openen.
Maar voor BP die pretendeert een kwaliteitskrant te zijn, is de ziekenhuisopname van prinses Bajrakitiyabha groot nieuws want opent met Thais wishing princess well voorzien van een 2-koloms foto met een gezonde glimlachende prinses.
De krant schrijft: Thais in het hele land wensen Hare Koninklijke Hoogheid Prinses Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati een spoedig herstel na te hebben vernomen dat ze donderdag in het ziekenhuis is opgenomen.
Wat biedt BP vandaag op deze vrijdagochtend aan nieuws? Het eerste katern bevat drie binnenland pagina’s, waarvan één een terugblik is op het Bangkok Post Year-End 2022 forum dat op 7 december werd gehouden met acht foto’s van de sprekers en de zaal. De overige twee pagina’s tellen negen nieuwsberichten en -verhalen, zes foto’s, waarvan vier in een fotobericht, en één postzegelfoto.
Prominent in het hart van de voorpagina het fotobericht Old palm medical wisdom met twee foto’s waarvan één over vier kolommen. De foto’s tonen een ritueel van het Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine dat twee driehonderd jaar oude palm-leaf manuscripten over tradionele medicijnformules heeft ontvangen van de Abhakara Foundation. Duidelijk? Nou nee, maar meer zegt het bijschrift niet.
Het Business katern opent met Companies hit with 20% power hike. De Energy Regulatory Commission heeft besloten de elektriciteitsrekening voor huishoudens ongewijzigd te laten, maar is van plan het tarief voor bedrijven te verhogen.
Life opent met een verhaal over de Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, a place for all seasons (From nature to your wrist). De studio, als ik het goed begrijp, is een nieuwe werkplaats, geopend in juli 2020, waar horloges van Seiko worden gemaakt.
BP schrijft: In de landelijke Japanse stad Shizukuishi in de prefectuur Iwate gaat een nieuwe houten studio voor Grand Seiko op in de natuurlijke omgeving. Een schuin dak en een helder glazen raam bieden een subliem uitzicht op Mount Iwate, meer dan 2000 meter hoog, waar rotsen hun ware kleuren ontvouwen als de sneeuw smelt.

Kijk op Mono29 naar Legend of Yunxi (Chinees:芸汐传) is een Chinese televisieserie uit 2018, gebaseerd op de roman Poison Genius Consort (Chinees:天才小毒妃) van Jie Mo. Ju Jingyi speelt de titelrol, naast Zhang Zhehan en Merxat. De serie werd in 2018 uitgezonden op iQIYI ,et 48 afleveringen. Vanwege het succes zijn er nog 2 afleveringen toegevoegd.
Het verhaal speelt zich af in een chaotische tijd waarin het land is opgesplitst in drie koninkrijken: Tian Ning, Western Qiu en Northern Li. De keizer van Tian Ning is sluw en wantrouwend, en vreest dat zijn eigen broer Long Feiye tegen hem in opstand zal komen. Om zijn stemming te temperen, regelt de koning dat Long Feiye trouwt met een vrouw met een gehavend gezicht genaamd Han Yunxi.
Han Yunxi is eigenlijk een mooie, aardige en getalenteerde vrouw die uit een medische familie komt en buitengewoon bedreven is in het ontgiften van gifstoffen. 15 december, 6:40 uur – Dat gebeurt niet vaak: werd om 6:23 uur wakker en nog geen minuut later dook de nachtwaker in mijn deuropening op om de krant te brengen. Beschikt Morpheus over telepathische gaven? Het lijkt er wel op of is het puur toeval dat zich nooit zal herhalen?
Maar ik ben nog niet in de stemming om uit de doeken te doen wat BP vandaag aan nieuws biedt. Eerst maar eens naar 7-Eleven om een tosti ham kaas te kopen waarmee ik wil ontbijten. En daarna terug naar mijn legersteede voor een voortgezette nachtrust.
Mijn lezers in Nederland en België zullen het niet eens merken, die liggen nog op één oor (tenzij ze op hun rug slapen). Dat is de grootste lezersgroep van mijn blog.
10:17 uur
BP telt vandaag bruto drie maar netto 2,5 binnenland pagina’s in het eerste katern met veertien nieuwsberichten en -verhalen, vijf foto’s, waarvan drie in een fotobericht, en drie postzegelfoto’s. De rubriek In Brief ontbreekt, extreem lang verhalen ontbreken eveneens.
De krant opent met Covid caveat for NY bashes. Het aftellen van het nieuwe jaar is toegestaan in Bangkok, hoewel bezoekers een mondkapje moeten dragen op plaatsen waar mensenmassa’s samenkomen.
Business opent met World Bank eyes slower Thai growth. De Thaise economie zal dit jaar naar verwachting sneller herstellen dan verwacht, maar volgens de Wereldbank in 2023 langzamer groeien als gevolg van wereldwijde tegenwind.
Ten slotte het Life katern, nog steeds mijn favoriete katern alhoewel het me nog niet is gelukt illustraties en tekst over te nemen. Het katern opent paginagroot plus een overlees van twee halve pagina’s met Mega fun in a megacity. Het verhaal gaat over São Paulo, omschreven als een city for city people where street art, street noise and street food cede, bu only occasionally, to high design, high rollers and high-end restaurants. Maar ik kan het niet vinden op de website, dus neem maar een foto over die staat bij het artikel Max this Xmas.

14 december – Wierp pas om 8:21 uur een eerste blik op de krant die ruim twee uur onaangeraakt op mijn bed had gelegen. Morpheus was onverbiddelijk en hield me al die tijd in zijn armen. Was nodig want ik kwam slaap tekort en was moe. Maar imiddels gaat het wel. Rustig aan, denk ik maar, dan breekt het lijntje niet, Nieuws uit Thailand is een hobby, geen betaald werk.
Gisteravond na terugkomst uit het centrum direct mijn bed ingedoken want ik had last van mijn maag. Twee veel te zware warme maaltijden gebruikt waartegen mijn maag protesteerde. Het rommelde en pruttelde in mijn maag; gelukkig viel ik snel in slaap.
Wat biedt de krant vandaag? In Vogelvlucht zonder vogel: Bruto drie maar netto 2,25 binnenlandpagina’s in het eerste katern met elf nieuwsberichten en -verhalen, vijf foto’ s en drie postzegelfoto’s. De rubriek In Brief ontbreekt, de grootste foto van vier kolommen bovenaan de voorpagina toont prinses Sirindhorn, het meest populaire lid van het koningshuis, op de tentoonstelling Decades of Style: The Royal Wardrobe of her Majesty Queen Sirikit in het Grand Palace. Ze werd vergezeld door prinses Sirvannavari Nariratana Rajakanya.

Een nieuwe dag, een nieuwe krant bij 23° (overwegend zonnig)
13 december – Wakker om 6:46 uur. De krant ligt al klaar, naar mijn kamer gebracht toen ik nog in Morpheus’ armen lag. De opening krant meldt paginabreed Early House dissolution ‘likely’. Potentiële massale afvalligheid naar Bhumjaithai, ’s lands tweede grootste politieke partij, zou volgens politieke waarnemers kunnen leiden tot een vroege ontbinding van het Huis van Afgevaardigden.
Wishful thinking of een realistische inschatting van het politieke klimaat? Ik denk het eerste, maar de tijd zal het leren.
Prominent bovenaan de voorpagina een 4-koloms foto van Wat Pho,de tempel met de reclining Buddha. Het Is er druk. Het bijschrift meldt dat het aantal toeristen de target van 10 miljoen heeft overschreden. Met 60.000 toeristen per dag wordt verwacht dat het aantal nog wel verder zal stijgen nu kerstmis en nieuwjaar er aan komen.
Onder de vouw een verhaal van een halve pagina getiteld Tradition meets contemporary creativity at Thai silk event, voorzien van bijgaande foto. Twee van ’s werelds bekendste modeontwerpers bespreken hoe de Thaise zijde-industrie echt mondiaal kan worden.

12 december – Wakker om 6:26 uur, de krant heeft mijn kamer nog niet bereikt dus ga naar beneden, naar de hal van het hotel, om mijn trouwe ochtendvriend op te halen. Van de hotelstaf waren alleen de nachtwaker en miss Piggy er, maar er lag nog geen krant. Die kwam pas om 6:44 uur en kon ik zelf uit handen van de bezorger op zijn motorfiets in ontvangst nemen.
Eerste indruk: een kleurrijke 5-koloms foto bovenaan de voorpagina bijna tot de vouw met modellen uit Kazachstan die gisteren zijden kleding showden tijdens de 3rd International Thai Silk Fashion Week in de Royal Paragon Hall van Siam Paragon. ’t Is een fotobericht, getiteld Bold in silk. Kan ik niet laten zien, want BP plaatst fotoberichten nooit op de website. Soms duiken die foto’s bij berichten op, dus wie weet krijgt u hem later alsnog te zien.

De motor wilde niet starten, de ontbijt croissant smaakte niet – kortom de dag had niet slechter kunnen beginnen.
Zoals gebruikelijk op zaterdag bestaat de krant uit twee katernen: Nieuws en Weekend Business. De krant opent met Tourism labour shortfall. Nu het toerisme geleidelijk herstelt na het opheffen van de beperkingen en het heropenen van de grenzen, hebben bedrijven in de toerismesector te maken met een tekort aan personeel om aan de sterke vraag te voldoen. 8 december – Gisteravond een klein stapje gezet in het ontrafelen van het doolhof Windows10, waarbij ik hulp heb gekregen van de vriend van mijn dochter. De vraag was: hoe kan ik een foto uit de foto app op mijn iPhone bijsnijden en die in Facebook plaatsen ter illustratie van mijn columns. Ik zal u niet vermoeien met de details van mijn (begeleide) zoektocht maar slechts melden dat het uiteindelijk gelukt is.
Het resultaat kunt u bekijken op FB, dat wil zeggen als u een zogeheten Facebookvriend van me bent. Ik ben in het toelaten van lezers namelijk selecief. Ik streef niet naar zoveel mogelijk bezoekers maar laat alleen mensen toe die ik ken en degenen die een band hebben met Thailand.
De foto toont een living statue bij metrostation Sam Yan waar ik uitstap als ik op weg ben naar restaurant Sarica voor de avondmaaltijd. Levende standbeelden heb ik voor het eerst gezien op de Ramblas in Barcelona. La Rambla is een autovrije verkeersader in het hart van Barcelona. Het is een met bomen omzoomde voetgangersboulevard van 1,2 kilometer met kiosken, bloemenstalletjes, kunstenaars, levende standbeelden, terrassen, restaurants en winkels en is een belangrijke toeristische trekpleister.

BP schrijft in An escape to another world: Voor vakantiegangers die een gevoel van Europa of Japan willen, is een korte rit naar Pak Chong en Khao Yai National Park alles wat je nodig hebt. Het verhaal beslaat de voorpagina plus twee halve pagina’s op de 4 en 5 met in totaal negen foto’s.
BP slaat zich vandaag weer eens op de borst door ruime aandacht te besteden aan het Bangkok Post Year-End forum 2022 met de opening 10m foreign tourist target nears, waarin een 4-koloms foto en vijf 1-koloms foto’s plus een fotoblok op de 2 met zeven foto’s.

6 december, 7:13 uur – De dag na de verjaardag van sinterklaas moet een van de gelukkigste dagen van een kinderleven zijn want dan kan er gespeeld worden met het nieuwe verworven speelgoed dat de goede sint cadeau heeft gedaan.
In mijn geval, ik weet niet meer hoe oud ik toen was, een Trix treintje, transformator en voldoende rails voor een cirkel wat het begin vormde van een emplacement. Aan de aanleg daarvan heb ik heel wat uren besteed.
Het toenmalige systeem bestaat niet meer; Trix is later overgestapt op HO, een kleinere schaal. De H0-schaal is met een verhouding van 1:87 de meest gebruikte modelspoorschaal. De verhouding van 1:87 betekent dat de treinen en alles eromheen in werkelijkheid 87 keer zo groot zijn als het schaalmodel. De spoorwijdte van H0 is 16,5 mm en is in werkelijkheid 1435,5 mm (normaalspoor).
Dit ter introductie van NuT van vandaag dat evenals de afgelopen dagen nog niet de omvang heeft die de rubriek had toen ik nog operereerde in Windows7. De overstap naar Windows10 was nodig, maar het zal nog wel enige tijd duren voor ik vertrouwd ben met alle functies.
De krant opent met Cabinet to review 2am limit. Het Ministerie van Tourism and Sports gaat het kabinet goedkeuring vragen voor zijn voorstel om uitgaansgelegenheden in geselecteerde gebieden na de sluitingstijd van 02.00 uur open te laten in een poging om de toeristenindustrie en de lokale economieën een boost te geven.
Het is een voorstel dat door de uitgaanssector met gejuich is ontvangen maar dat kritiek heeft opgeroepen van maatschappelijke organisaties. Als het kabinet groen licht geeft, mogen uitgaansgelegenheden in bepaalde gebieden in negen provincies tot 4 uur open blijven.
Deze locaties omvatten Khao San Road, Silom Road, Soi Cowboy, Soi Nana en een korte strook van Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok; Bangla Road in de wijk Patong in Phuket, Chaweng Beach op Koh Samui en het Rin-strand van Koh Phangan in Surat Thani; Pattaya’s Walking Street in Chon Buri; Khao Lak in Phangnga; Nimmanhemin Road in de districten Chiang Mai, Hat Yai en Sadao in Songkhla; Ao Nang in Krabi en Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Deze locaties zijn erg populair bij buitenlandse toeristen en hebben als zodanig een groot potentieel om speciale zones voor nachtelijk entertainment te worden.
Als het kabinet groen licht geeft voor het voorstel, zullen nachtclubs aan Bangla Road in Patong de eersten zijn die tot 4 uur open mogen, zodat de autoriteiten kunnen peilen in hoeverre lokale operators en gemeenschappen gereed zijn.
Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn (Tourism and Sports) dringt er bij critici van het voorstel op aan zich niet tegen het plan te verzetten. Hij zegt dat het toestaan van uitgaansgelegenheden tot 4 uur de zakenwinst zal stimuleren met 25-30%.
De sterkste kritiek kwam van groepen die tegen het rijden onder invloed zijn; ze zijn bezorgd dat de langere uren zullen leiden tot meer alcoholgebruik en dus tot meer ongevallen.
Wat de krant verder biedt, mag u zelf uitzoeken op de website. In tegenstelling tot met Windows7 lukt het me (nog?) niet tekst en foto’s uit BP over te nemen. De omweg die ik bij 7 gebruikte, werkt niet. Vooral het katern Life dat doorgaans illustratief de meest aantrekkelijke voorpagina heeft, is daarvan de dupe.
Wilt u weten wat voor moois Life toont, klik op Crossing boundaries. Graffitikunstenaar Alex Face blikt in een nieuwe tentoonstelling terug op zijn carrière van twee decennia, maar zegt dat hij zijn verfblikken nog niet aan de wilgen hangt.

5 december – Evenals gisteren maak ik een summiere en onvolledige NuT want navigeren in Windows10 gaat moeizaam en het lukt niet altijd. Niets is hetzelfde, alleen hotmail is vertrouwd. Uiterst frustrerend; heb dan ook de neiging het bijltje erbij neer te leggen.
BP telt vandaag bruto drie maar netto 2,5 binnenland pagina’s in het eerste katern met elf nieuwsberichten en -verhalen, waaronder een kortje en een lang bericht met een overlees, vijf foto’s en vijf 1-koloms foto’s.
De geboortedag van koning Bhumibol, vandaag, levert de krant geen windeieren op want op tal van pagina’s brengen bedrijven en organisaties een eerbetoon aan de geliefde monarch. In een kortje op de voorpagina schrijft BP: Ter nagedachtenis aan Zijne Majesteit Koning Bhumibol Adulyadej de Grote, sluit de Bangkok Post zich aan bij de natie om vandaag de verjaardag van de geliefde overleden monarch te herdenken, die wordt gevierd als Nationale Dag en Thaise Vaderdag.
De krant opent met Party denies ‘Tuhao’ ties. Oppositiepartij Pheu Thai Party en SC Asset Corporation ontkennen banden te hebben met een Chinees crimineel syndicaat geleid door zakenman en vermoedelijke misdaadbaas Chaiyanat ‘Tuhao’ Kornchayanant. Ze zeggen dat vijanden proberen de reputatie van de partij en het bedrijf te ruïneren.
Het Business katern opent met Fresh concerns over Covid. Terwijl bedrijven hun hoop vestigen op een sterk herstel in de laatste maand van het jaar op basis van levendige winkelactiviteiten, amusementsevenementen en levendig toerisme, is er een nieuwe Omicron-uitbraak ontstaan met een stijgend dodental, waardoor de bezorgdheid over de impact op het economisch sentiment weer oplaait.
Life opent met Rip and roar. In totaal nemen 35 auto- en 17 motormerken deel aan de Thailand International Motor Expo van dit jaar, die momenteel wordt gehouden in Impact Challenger Muang Thong Thani.

4 december – Gisteren heeft u Nieuws uit Thailand moeten missen omdat ik Windows7 heb laten vervangen door Windows10 en daarmee moet ik me nog vertrouwd maken.
Vandaag maak ik een eenvoudige NuT op basis van wat ik nu weet en kan toepassen. Het zal nog wel enige tijd vergen voor ik alle vereiste handelingen en functies onder de knie heb. Maar de overstap van 7 naar 10 was hard nodig want 7 leverde talloze problemen op zoals progamma’s die niet of uiterst traag reageerden.
BP bestaat zoals gebruikelijk op zondag uit drie katernen: Nieuws, Sunday comics en Spotlight met artikelen uit de New York Times. Het katern opent onder de kop They pause puberty, but is there a cost? over transgenders.
De krant schrijft: Puberty blockers can ease transgender youths’ anguish and buy time to weigh options. But concerns are growing about long-term physical effects and other consequences.
Een arts die een bone research lab leidt, zegt: There’s going to be a price … And the price is probably going to be in some deficit in skeletal mass.

2 december, 7:04 uur – Zou Dhanin Chearavanont, voorzitter van Charoen Pokphand Group en als ik niet abuis ben de rijkste man van Thailand, een van de financiers zijn die de zwaar verliesgevende Bangkok Post kunstmatig op de been houden?
Want waarom anders mag Thailand’s Dagobert Duck BP vandaag openen met zijn voorspelling dat de bedrijfsgroei in Thailand volgend jaar positief is – ondanks wereldwijde uitdagingen (Upbeat outlook) en komt hij op pagina 3 nog een keer terug met CP chief wants biz students in workforce at 18. Wiens brood men eet, diens woord men spreekt, zal wel de verklaring zijn.
Na een onderbreking van een kleine drie uur doorgegaan met een bespreking van de krant oftewel een vogelvlucht zonder vogel. BP telt vandaag bruto drie maar netto 2,5 binnenland pagina’s in het eerste katern met elf nieuwsberichten en –verhalen, waaronder één kortje en een lijvig achtergrondverhaal, zes foto’s en twee postzegelfoto’s.
Het achtergrondverhaal Plugging the gap zegt dat arbeiders uit Myanmar graag willen terugkeren, maar werkgevers en de overheid moeten meer doen om hen te behouden.
Het Business katern opent met Tourism making gradual recovery. Het hersteltempo van het Thaise toerisme verloopt trager dan in de buurlanden. Volgens toonaangevende regionale reistechnologiebedrijven is dit te wijten aan een tekort aan vluchten en de afwezigheid van belangrijke markten zoals China. De kop doet me denken aan de vraag of een glas half vol dan wel half leeg is.
Life biedt een voorpagina met zeven foto’s van de Hermès petit h pop-up die aldus de intro creates a colourful world steeped in sustainability. De foto die ik overneem, moet het duidelijker maken dan deze omschrijving. De krant kopt Small name, big mission en schrijft: Ondanks dat de naam klein betekent, heeft petit h een grote missie.
In 2010 richtte Hermès de petit h workshop op om een speelse dialoog op gang te brengen rond duurzaamheid en heruitvinding, objectcreatie en hergebruik van materialen. Vanaf het ankerpunt in de Hermès-winkel aan de rue de Sèvres in Parijs reist het nomadische petit h naar andere locaties over de hele wereld.
De Hermès-winkel in Iconsiam is van 18 november tot 11 december omgetoverd tot een levendige tempelbeurs om de kleine creaties te laten zien. De Thaise kunstenaar Suntur herinterpreteert het traditionele Thaise festival met zijn minimalistische stijl, wat resulteert in een meeslepende scenografie die het leuker maakt om de duplexwinkel en de prachtige objecten te verkennen.

‘Thara Thong’ terug met zang en dans
2 december – Met zijn spirituele dansvoorstellingen, redelijk gekruide keuken en klassieke architectuur, was het des te teleurstellender toen de pandemie ervoor zorgde dat Thara Thong, ook bekend als ‘Golden River’’, moest sluiten. Maar dat maakt het des te zoeter nu het weer op de been is, vooral omdat het nieuwe team van de gelegenheid gebruik heeft gemaakt om de productie aan te passen met oog voor verrassing.
Het verheven gasthotel van het restaurant, geen onbekende in het overleven van de occasionele internationale crisis, wappert sinds de lanceringsdag in 1983 met de Sheraton-vlag langs de River of Kings en wordt gracieus oud. Haar sierlijkheid in bomen, ondersteund en uitgehouwen in een stijl die doet denken aan de koninklijke hoven van het oude Siam, badend in de retro oranje gloed van Edison-gloeilampen en getweakt met zachte stoffen kussens rond traditionele lage tafels, behoudt zijn glans en mystiek.
Michael Schlueter, de manager van het hotel, leidde de lancering op een recente avond toen de hele buurt van Captain Bush Lane tot River City en over het water naar ICONSIAM samenwerkte met kosmopolitische kleuren, net als de goede oude tijd van 2019. Nou ja, bijna.
Bij het verwelkomen van een full house die de meeste van de ongeveer 80 plaatsen van het restaurant vulde, richtte Schlueter zich op drie Thaise gerechten die onlangs op de lijst van CNN Travel World’s 50 Best Foods stonden, namelijk massaman ‘the king of curries’ op nr. 1, tom yum gung pittige garnalensoep op nr. 8, en som tam papajasalade op 46.
Ze staan allemaal op het menu, maar, zoals Schlueter wrang opmerkte, werd er geen geserveerd tijdens de proeverij. In plaats daarvan presenteerde het exclusief de hedendaagse creatieve lijn die de Zweedse chef-kok Tomas Keskitalo heeft samengesteld in samenwerking met het diep Thaise erfgoedkeuken, doordrenkt en lieflijk gezind duet van de leidende Thaise chef-koks Wongjan Kwanmongkhon en Khanidta Kaewsupan.
De zachtaardige Schlueter rekent de mediterrane, Franse en Scandinavische keuken tot zijn sterkste punten en er waren er in ieder geval een paar die terug te vinden waren in de nieuwe kenmerkende gerechten die werden geserveerd.

Fotograaf Wing Shya exposeert in Hop Photo Gallery
2 december – De in Hong Kong gevestigde kunstenaar Wing Shya presenteert zijn werk in de solo-fototentoonstelling ‘Wing Shya The Photography Exhibition’ in Hop Photo Gallery, Seacon Square.
Wing Shya staat bekend om zijn kunstwerken op verschillende gebieden. Zijn werk omvat film, fotografie en mode. Hij is gespecialiseerd in het vastleggen van de sfeer en verbindingen tussen paren, inclusief hun samenleven en hun intimiteit in het moment.
Wanneer mensen naar zijn foto’s kijken, is er altijd de perceptie dat de tijd is gestopt sinds hij zijn diepste verlangens naar liefde en gehechtheid, isolatie en eenzaamheid heeft vastgelegd. De wereld lijkt te zijn vertraagd, waardoor het publiek op dat speciale moment verbinding kan maken.
Wing Shya’s werk met fotografie achter de schermen op de sets van de veelgeprezen regisseur Wong Kar-Wai is een medium dat ons helpt de perceptie van Hong Kong in een filmframe te begrijpen. Naast opnamen achter de schermen, zijn foto’s van Wing Shya te zien geweest in tal van wereldwijde commercials en tijdschriften in Europa, Azië en Amerika. Hij verblijft momenteel in een studio in Hong Kong.

2 december – De ruime aandacht voor de miljardair vormt geen stimulans om mij met volle overgave op de krant te werpen. Ik doe mijn best maar kan niets garanderen.
De voorpagina bevat behalve de opening en het begin van het achtergrondverhaal twee berichten en het fotobericht Thai top gun met een foto van een straaljager die een stunt uitvoert op de jaarlijkse luchtvaartshow in Shaban (Lop Buri). Het bijschrift zegt dat de show dient om de slagkracht van de luchtmacht te laten zien.

• One killed, 3 burned in fireworks factory explosion
One person was killed and three others suffered major burns in an explosion at a fireworks factory in Muang district of Suphan Buri on Wednesday morning. The explosion occurred at a converted farm house at Khoi Ngam village in tambon Salakhao around 10am on Wednesday.
Workers fled the building in terror as exploding fireworks tore it apart. Firemen and rescue workers rushed to the factory, sited on 2-rai of a former paddy field.
One person was found dead inside the building. Three other people suffered major burns over 50% of their bodies and were rushed to Chao Phraya Yommarat Hospital. The factory was left a ruin. Police were investigating.
